MOSCOW, 20 Jul – Australian high jumper Elinor Patterson, when asked about the suspension of Olympic champion Maria Lasitskene and other Russians from the World Championships in athletics, said that the sport has become too politicized.
The Council of the World Athletics Association (World Athletics) on March 1, against the backdrop of events in Ukraine, suspended Russian and Belarusian athletes from participating in international tournaments, including the World Championships in Eugene.
“To be honest, this question is difficult to answer. You see both sides of this story. But you don’t see the whole story at the same time. It’s always unpleasant when someone with such talent and awards is not here. But in the end, the sport became too politicized. You would not want it, but sport has become a platform. Unfortunately, you understand that not everything is in order in the world when you talk to Ukrainian athletes and hear about their difficulties,” Patterson quotes The San Diego Union-Tribune.
“Obviously, the situation in Ukraine is very well covered. It’s a pity that other conflicts are not as well covered. Unfortunately, we as a society have pushed matters aside and paid no attention to other conflicts. But I would not want to take lightly the decision to exclude an entire nation ” added the Australian.
At the World Championships in Eugene, Patterson won gold in the high jump. The second was the Ukrainian Yaroslav Maguchy.
