Daniele De Rossi, a legendary figure at AS Roma, has joined the list of iconic players who struggled as head coaches at their former clubs. AS Roma announced today that they have dismissed De Rossi from his position as head coach, following a poor start to the Serie A season. The club shared the news on their official website.
Roma’s performance in the first four matches of the new season has been disappointing. The team failed to win any of their games, drawing against Cagliari, Juventus, and Genoa, and suffering a home defeat to Empoli. During these matches, they managed to score only two goals.
De Rossi, a 2006 World Cup winner with Italy and a former defensive midfielder, was let go due to these underwhelming results.
In a statement, AS Roma said: “We announce that Daniele De Rossi has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the first team. The club has taken this decision in the best interest of the team. Although the season is still in its early stages, we aim to get back on track as soon as possible.”
The club also expressed gratitude to De Rossi, saying: “Thank you very much, De Rossi. The passion and dedication you have shown in recent months will always be remembered by the club.”
De Rossi took over as Roma’s head coach on January 16, replacing José Mourinho. In his time as coach, Roma won 14 of the 30 matches, with 7 losses and 9 draws. The club finished sixth in the league last season and qualified for the UEFA Europa League, even reaching the Europa League semi-finals under De Rossi’s leadership.
However, after a 1-1 draw with Genoa in their most recent match, Roma has fallen to 16th in the Serie A standings, leading to the end of De Rossi’s 9-month stint as coach of the team he holds dear.
