Speculation swirls around Virat Kohli’s potential retirement from Test cricket, with reports suggesting the 36-year-old batting maestro informed Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) of his intent to step away ahead of India’s five-match Test series in England, starting June 20. BCCI keen to retain Kohli’s experience, has urged him to reconsider. But questions linger: Is Kohli’s decision driven by a dip in form, or has his spirit for the longest format waned?

Kohli’s recent Test performances have drawn scrutiny. During the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, he scored a century in Perth but managed only 190 runs across five Tests. Averaging a modest 23.75. Critics point to a recurring weakness against deliveries outside the off-stump, which has led to eight of his ten dismissals in Australia. Over the past five years Kohli’s Test average has dipped to 32.56 stark contrast to his peak of 55.10 in 2019 after a career-best 254 not out against South Africa.

Despite this, Kohli’s legacy remains formidable. With 9,230 runs in 123 Tests at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries, he ranks as India’s fourth-highest Test run-scorer. His leadership transformed India into a Test powerhouse securing 40 wins in 68 matches as captain—a record unmatched by any Indian skipper.

BCCI’s plea for Kohli to stay reflects his value, especially after Rohit Sharma’s recent Test retirement. With veterans like Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane absent, and Mohammed Shami’s form uncertain, India’s middle order risks inexperience without Kohli. Youngsters like Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and KL Rahul would shoulder the batting burden, potentially under Gill’s captaincy.

Former cricketer Mohammad Kaif called Kohli a “lion” who shouldn’t exit quietly urging him to roar one last time in England, where he excelled in 2018 with 583 runs at 59.30. Fans echo this sentiment, flooding social media with pleas for Kohli to continue, viewing his potential exit as premature.

Kohli’s contemplation isn’t impulsive. Reports indicate he’s been discussing retirement with BCCI for over a month, with thoughts brewing since Australia. While his IPL 2025 form—over 505 runs in 11 matches—shows his hunger, Test cricket’s grind may no longer align with his focus, especially after retiring from T20Is last year.

BCCI has enlisted a “highly influential cricketing figure” to persuade Kohli, emphasizing his mentorship for a new captain and a fragile middle order. Yet, sources suggest Kohli’s resolve remains firm, with no public statement clarifying his stance.

As India prepares for England, the cricket world watches. Will Kohli heed Kaif’s call for a final roar, or has the off-stump nemesis dimmed his Test fire? Fans hope for one last masterclass from the modern great, but time—and Kohli’s heart—will decide.
