Ángel Di María concluded his remarkable career by clinching the Copa América title in July. Throughout his illustrious journey, he secured two Copa América titles and the coveted World Cup for Argentina. Notably, Di María scored in both the 2021 Copa América and the 2022 World Cup finals.
His consistent success has led many to rank him among Argentina’s all-time greats, alongside legends like Messi and Maradona. His performances and statistics back this claim, and Di María himself has weighed in on the discussion.
Javier Mascherano, a former Argentine star and youth coach, praised Di María, saying, “Excluding Messi and Maradona, for me, Di María, 37, would be in the top five Argentine players of the last 40-50 years.”
Argentina’s late World Cup-winning coach, César Luis Menotti, also held Di María in high regard, stating, “He is a player who deserves to be among the best footballers. I would put him in the queue with Kempes, Maradona, and Messi.”
Interestingly, Di María considers himself the best in Argentina, even ahead of Maradona and Messi. In a recent interview with ESPN, he expressed, “It’s a lot like being first (best). Because Leo (Messi) and Diego are from another planet. Playing with Leo and having Diego as a coach, that’s enough.”
